John (The Boxer) McIlree
Born: 1912

John (The Boxer) McIlree, shown in the picture (above right) was a boxer of renown who held the prestigious 'Belt of India' boxing trophy as a serving soldier and later in civilian life ran a boxing club in Cookstown. He was also involved with training the Northern Ireland boxing team.

An extract from the Mid Ulster Mail of January 3, 1959:

'Five boxers who won titles at the Tyrone Championships in Dungannon were: P. Forbes (lightweight), B. Hunter (featherweight), T. Martin (light-heavyweight), J. Mitchell (middleweight), T. Palmer (welterweight). Their trainers were John McIlree and L. McGucken.'

Golf

H McIlree

I have no other knowledge of H McIlree other than he must have been a very good young golfer as he was runner up in Ulster Boys Championships for three years running. I am not sure if the H McIlree at Knock and the M Mcilree from Knock that won the Connacht Boys Open Amateur Championships were the same person.
